Proper Acne Prevention Regime

Acne is caused by dirt.  This is a statement that sounds reasonable but it is a misconception that is very commonly made.  Acne is actually caused by a variety of different factors that are out of your control, such as the normal pace of your particular skins renewal system and your hormone balance.  Even though these are factors that you are unable to control, there are other things that you can do that can help a great deal in helping to control your problems with acne.

How to Prevent Most Acne Breakouts and Blemishes

  1. Do not wash your skin excessively.  Numerous people continuously scrub their skin thinking this will help their problem with acne.  Since these problems are not caused by dirt to begin with you should try to limit the amount of times you wash your face each day to two times.  Amounts that are more than that will only leave your skin feeling dry, and it can cause the areas that are prone to acne outbreaks to become irritated.  Over-washing can also cause extra oil production, and this will only lead to even more outbreaks.
  2. Alcohol should not be used.  Astringents that are strong and contain high levels of alcohol can actually strip the top surface of your skin and cause more oil to be produced by the sebaceous glands, which will lead to more outbreaks and red skin that is dry.  Use products and toners that do not contain high levels of isopropyl alcohol.
  3. Exercise and shower.  When you exert yourself exercising it is natural that your body will produce more heat and the equipment you use and clothing you wear will cause more friction.  The heat and moisture produced while exercising will stay in constant contact with your skin, which can be the perfect breeding ground for bacteria to spread.  To prevent this you should shower as quickly as possible after working out.
  4. No harsh scrubs.  When you exfoliate, you should make sure to use a formula that is gentle and contains grains that are small and smooth.  You should always avoid those that contain fragments of almonds or apricots because these are very irritating to the skin, which can cause aggravation to acne areas, and they can even cause tears on your skin.
  5. Keep your hands away.  When you touch your skin excessively, such as when you rest your chin on top of your hands, it can actually cause bacteria to be driven into the pores.  The bacterium that causes problems with acne or propionibacterium finds its normal residency on your skin, and when it becomes trapped inside the follicles of the hair it can lead to frustrating problems with acne.
  6. No picking or squeezing.  This is an action that people do not realize can cause bacteria to be embedded deeper in the skin, which will ultimately cause more infections and inflammation.  Using items such as your fingernails or safety pins can cause further damage to areas that surround blemishes, and this can lead to scarring.

The Prevention and Treatment of Acne – There are numerous treatments that are available to individuals who are suffering problems with acne.  Several over-the-counter formulas work great for mild cases of acne.  Many times if you will begin treatment before the acne becomes severe, you are much more likely to avoid suffering the experience of emotional and physical problems that can be associated with severe forms of acne.  If your problems seem to last longer than a few weeks, you should seek the professional advice of a dermatologist.
