Galderma Labs (based in Texas), has come out with a topical acne medicine that combines adapalene with the germ-killer benzoyl peroxide. The medicine is called Epiduo, and it’s said to work for 75% of acne cases. It’s been through clinical trials, and the people who used it had very few side effects. A lot of them saw their skin change for the better in just about a week. It was approved by the FDA in December of 2008, for those who are 12 or older. It should be available soon.

Adapalene, half of the Epiduo formula, works by inhibiting cell growth, and bringing down inflammation and swelling. the growth of cells and decreasing swelling and inflammation. The other part, benzoyl peroxide, helps to reduce the amount of bacteria on the skin, and causing the infected skin to dry and flake off.

How do you use Epiduo? Wash your hands before you put it on. Clean your face with a gentle cleanser, and pat it dry. Apply a thin layer of the medicine once a day.

It’s meant to be used only on the skin, and hands should be washed after use. Keep it out of the nose and lip area, and don’t apply it to any skin that’s sunburned, cut, or has a rash. If it gets in your eyes, rinse them with water and call your doctor.

During the first few weeks of using Epiduo, your acne might look like it’s getting worse, because the medicine is working on pimples that are just beginning to form below the surface of the skin. You should use it as your doctor directs you to, in order to get full benefit from it. Using it at the same time every day (like after a shower) might help you remember. Don’t use more than your doctor recommends, because it won’t make your skin better any faster, and may actually cause your skin to become really irritated.

As always, if the medicine isn’t working, or if your condition gets worse, tell your doctor.
