Acne is a condition shared by many, a humiliating skin condition that steals self-confidence and can lead to possible scaring. Typically, acne first occurs around puberty, but can also emerge later in life. To combat acne, the first step is to properly understand what causes acne.
Acne Causes
On the skin, tiny pits known as sebaceous follicles produce a chemical called oily sebum. Aptly named, oily sebum serves to moisturize the skin and moderate body temperature. When these follicles begin to overproduce sebum as a result of hormone changes, acne happens in turn. By overproducing sebum, dirt gets trapped within pores. When pores become clogged, then a pimple starts to develop, multiply this process a few dozen times, and the result is an acne breakout.
Vegetables and Acne Treatment
For most teens, the solution to an acne problem is a trip to the local drug store to pick up an over-the-counter solution. Faced with peer pressure and social struggles, most teens don’t take the time to visit a dermatologist or seek out a long-term method of acne control.
But here’s one tip to help anyone combat acne: eat more vegetables. In a recent study published in the Medical Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers found a possible link between diet and acne rates. However, this study found that linking eating directly to acne breakouts is difficult, so feel free to ignore old misconceptions regarding chocolate and acne. What this study did find was that an increased level of vegetable consumption directly correlated to a decrease in acne breakouts.
How exactly do vegetables help acne? Vegetables are not only lower in sugar, but take longer to break down and overall help to stabilize and lower blood sugar levels. When this happens, sugars are distributed throughout the body at a slower pace, causing the redness associated with acne to subside.
The study was executed as follows: first, the subjects proceeded to eat a standard diet, although rich in vegetables, for a period of 12 weeks. After the 12-week period, the subjects were instructed to stop eating meat and focus on foods high in fiber and carbohydrates. When the 12 weeks were over, acne outbreaks had dropped dramatically. When the subjects stopped eating meat, the results were mind-blowing.
So, why take a harsh drug or acne regimen when there’s an easier alternative? Start eating more vegetables today, it’s just that easy!
