Whiteheads – Also known as closed comedones, whiteheads are sebum-filled pores mixed with dead cells that cause P.acne bacterium to multiply and form. Because whiteheads are closed, oxygen is unable to penetrate the surface of the skin and produce melanin (skin pigment). This is why the bacteria is a white color and the area of infection swells.

Blackheads – Also known as open comedones, blackheads are sebum-filled pores mixed with dead cells that have a larger opening at the surface of the skin. This large opening allows air to penetrate the surface and create skin pigment (melanin). Because of this, the color becomes black and no swelling occurs at point of infection.

Treatment – The treatment for both blackheads and whiteheads is very similar. Anything with a good amount of benzoyl peroxide will be effective on both blackheads and whiteheads, as well as on pimples in general.
